Half of AI data centers are delayed and canceled, desperate for Chinese electrical gear - Summary, Key Takeaways & FAQ
Half of AI data centers delayed due to reliance on Chinese electrical gear, reveals Inside China Business.

In a recent video by "Inside China Business," titled "Half of AI data centers are delayed and canceled, desperate for Chinese electrical gear," the unfolding crisis in the construction of AI data centers is laid bare. This video caught my attention as it highlights a huge bottleneck in the tech field.
The Investment Paradox
The numbers are staggering. Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Microsoft have announced investments amounting to $650 billion this year alone. But here's the thing - despite the money pouring in, the ground reality is starkly different. Over half of the planned data centers for 2026 may not see the light of day. Why? Supply chain issues, chiefly.
The video does a great job shedding light on why these data centers aren’t getting built. The primary culprit? A severe shortage of electrical components, most of which are sourced from China. It’s ironic, isn’t it? The U.S. aims to lead in AI, yet it lacks domestic manufacturing capabilities for critical electrical equipment.
Supply Chain Crisis
The backlog for crucial components like high-power electrical transformers has grown from two years to five. And prices have doubled! It's a bit of a vicious cycle - as demand skyrockets, the U.S. data center constructors are forced to increase their reliance on Chinese suppliers. Despite all the talk of reducing dependence on China, the trend isn't reversing.
Political and Economic Tensions
What struck me was the political angle. Data center construction isn’t exactly a vote-winner, which complicates matters. And even as geopolitical tensions rise, the economic necessity to procure from China persists. It seems like a no-win situation.
While tariffs were meant to curb reliance on Chinese imports, the economic imperatives haven't changed. Chinese manufacturers are still the go-to for gas turbines and other gear. This ongoing dependency is something I've seen across various technological sectors. It's a reminder that politics and economics don't always align.
Looking Forward
Will the U.S. overcome these hurdles? That's the million-dollar question. Without diversifying supply sources, the road to completing these AI infrastructures looks bumpy. In my experience, overcoming such entrenched supply chain dependencies isn't straightforward.
